Food Growing/harvesting

🌾 Food Growing & Harvesting Program

Strengthening small farmers, protecting traditional foods, and building village‑level food security

Our Food Growing & Harvesting Program supports small farmer units in towns and villages across Sri Lanka. These units help struggling farmers regain stability, increase income, and protect our traditional food chain — including heritage rice varieties, ancient grains, and climate‑resilient crops.

Any registered society can participate in this program. We provide guidance, connect you with donors, and ensure that every project follows a transparent, community‑driven process.

This initiative protects Sri Lanka’s agricultural heritage while improving food security for future generations.

📋 Instructions for Village Societies (Step‑by‑Step)

1. Confirm Your Eligibility

Your society must be:

  • Registered under the Government of Sri Lanka

  • Able to provide valid registration documents

  • Willing to form or support small farmer units

  • Committed to transparency and regular reporting

No university partnership is required for this project.

2. Identify Your Food Growing or Harvesting Activity

Your project can focus on:

  • Traditional rice varieties

  • Sorghum, kurakkan, maize

  • Vegetables and pulses

  • Banana, jackfruit, breadfruit

  • Home‑garden food forests

  • Drought‑resistant crops

  • Organic farming methods

Your proposal should clearly state:

  • What crops you will grow

  • How many farmers are involved

  • Expected community benefits

  • How the harvest will support food security

3. Prepare a Simple Proposal

Your proposal can be short and practical. Include:

  • Society name & registration

  • Location

  • Type of crops

  • Number of farmers

  • Land availability

  • Expected harvest

  • Support needed (tools, seeds, training, compost, etc.)

We will help refine it if needed.

4. Submit Your Proposal to Us

Once submitted, we will:

  • Review your society’s registration

  • Check your readiness to form farmer units

  • Ensure the project supports traditional food systems

  • Approve your project for donor matching

5. We Find a Donor for Your Project

We connect your society with a verified donor who supports:

  • Food security

  • Traditional agriculture

  • Climate‑resilient farming

  • Community empowerment

The donor will directly support your society — we do not collect any money.

6. Donor Participation & Transparency

To ensure accountability:

  • Donor must join at least four online meetings

  • All meetings are recorded

  • Society must share progress updates

  • Photos, videos, and field notes must be documented

  • Harvest results must be reported

This protects both the donor and the community.

7. Implement the Food Growing Project

Your society will:

  • Form small farmer units

  • Provide training and guidance

  • Use compost, biochar, and organic methods

  • Grow traditional and climate‑resilient crops

  • Share updates with the donor

  • Conduct community harvesting events

We provide planning support and troubleshooting.

8. Completion & Tax Documentation

After successful completion:

  • Donor receives a tax refund document

  • Society receives a completion certificate

This builds trust and encourages future donors.
